Meet our Nurses

 Mel Penn
Position: Registered Veterinary Nurse
I qualified as a R.A.N.A in 1984 after spending 2 years in a training practice and then 6 months at the BCA. I spent time working in practices in London, Bedfordshire and then spent three years as an equine vet nurse in Buckinghamshire. After moving to Suffolk, I joined the Barn in 1991. After a small gap (20 years!) being at home for my 2 children, I have very much enjoyed returning to veterinary nursing and the Barn. Outside of work I have 2 ponies, 3 dogs, 2 cats and 2 chickens to keep me busy. I also love gardening and sailing.

 Donna Hammond RVN
Position: Head Veterinary Nurse
I qualified as a RANA (Registered Animal Nursing Auxiliary) before a lot of our nurses were even born, later becoming an RVN. I have worked at the Barn for so long I have run out of fingers and toes to count the years. In practice my main interests are medical nursing. Outside of work I have a Border Terrier called Bumble and an Irish Draught Horse called Bob.

Position: Registered Veterinary Nurse
I came to the Barn as a newly qualified nurse in September 1999! I am a clinical coach which means I have an active role in training our nurses in practice.
I have come and gone over the years due to family life but have always been keen to get back to the Barn ASAP!
I love most things about my job, the patients being high up on my list as well as an interest in Radiography.

Out of work I am kept busy with a young family and a love of horses as well as looking after my Labrador, 3 cats and 2 guinea pigs.

Having spent my teenage years competing horses every weekend, I went on to work on a commercial yard and qualified as a British Horse Society Accredited Instructor in the 1980s.

 Nic Last RVN
Position: Registered Veterinary Nurse
I became a qualified veterinary nurse back in 2002, after attending a 3 year course at Otley College. I have worked at the practice all my working life. I have a vast array of pets of my own, ranging from pygmy goats to lizards. I am currently studying for a certificate in exotics. I enjoy spending time with my young family on lots of holidays, including going away in our caravan.

 Charley Humphreys
Position: Student Veterinary Nurse
I began my Veterinary Nursing journey at Writtle College in 2012, studying a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management. This gave me the qualifications I required to start a foundation degree in Veterinary Nursing at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) in London, which I am currently loving! I am due to qualify as a Registered Veterinary Nurse in July 2019, after which I hope to continue for a year at the RVC and gain a BSc in Veterinary Nursing.

Whilst not at work or studying, I spend my time (attempting to) train my new rescue puppy Jasper, or socialising with friends and family and enjoying what little sun and nice weather the UK has to offer.
